Overview

Minas Basin Pulp & Power Company Limited has completed a series of capital equipment additions and process improvements in recent years, intended to reduce the company’s impact on the environment. These initiatives were part of an implementation plan consisting of two elements; enhancement of manufacturing output through more efficient use of existing energy resources, thereby achieving emissions avoidance, and outright elimination of consumption through utilization of alternate or more efficiently obtained energy inputs, thus curtailing usage.

The program involved a benchmark year of 2002 and establishment of a related carbon inventory for the business. Documentation of projects, quantification of progress, technical consulting and representation are being provided by L2i-Solutions Financieres, St. Lambert, Quebec. Verification and auditing to the ISO 14064 Standard is being achieved under the guidance of Carbon Quantum, St. Lambert, Quebec.

The program also includes a significant public and employee education strategy, as well as a structured vision of adaptation for the company in future periods. The results achieved to date represent a defined commitment by Minas Basin’s management to the realization of long-term environmental objectives.

Presently Minas Basin Pulp & Power Co Ltd has recorded and registered carbon tonnes with the Green House Gas Projects Registry of the Canadian Standards Association, in Ottawa. Registry details can be viewed at the CSA Climate Change website; http://www.ghgregistries.ca/cleanprojects/masterprojectdetails_e.cfm?pid=823
